LIFESAVING CARRY AMMO
Along with a quality handgun and holster, I have long considered enough spare ammunition for at least one reload to be essential personal safety equipment. Uniformed law enforcement officers routinely carry a pair of spare magazines, at least one less-lethal weapon, handcuffs, and a portable radio on the duty belt. Ironically, many of these same officers forego carrying any spare ammunition off duty or when on plainclothes assignments. Armed citizens too, erroneously feel that since they are equipped with a hi-cap pistol, an extra magazine isn’t worth the effort.
Armed confrontations tend to be fast breaking, short-range affairs that are over in just a few seconds. But while extended exchanges of gunfire are the exception rather than the rule, are you willing to bet your life on that? I’m not, and that slight inconvenience in carrying extra ammunition will pay dividends should Mr. Murphy call and you find yourself in an unusual event.
ROBARIZED G22 9mm
I know this fact may be sacrilege for many in the audience, but the Glock platform pistol is set to surpass the M1911 as the most prevalent pistol in circulation here in the U.S. Hundreds of thousands of Glock pistols are in the hands of citizens nationwide.
This being the case it is only natural that an entire aftermarket and custom industry surrounds the design. Numerous companies are offering parts and accessories to modify, customize, and enhance the Glock. Custom gunsmiths across the nation have been applying their own unique grip patterns and reconfigurations for many years now.
The primary subject for this review would be a standard Glock 22 chambered in .40 S&W. For this piece I would take the stock pistol and have several modifications made, both practical and cosmetic.
Robbie Barrkman, through Robar Companies, has been making Glock pistols “fit” and “feel” differently for many years now. They have an entire menu of choices. These include a grip reduction, to include removal of finger grooves if the owner desires, removing the triggerguard hook, and fabricating a high beavertail.
Their slide work includes forward cocking serrations, beveling/rounding the forward slide face, and custom engraving to name a few. Robar’s custom shop is the place where all of the new/additional parts for this pistol package would be installed and where the transformation would take place.
I wanted the pistol to look good and shoot well. In addition to the custom shop work, I shipped a number of aftermarket parts for the Glock along with the pistol. Having previous experience with multi-caliber Glocks, I knew that I could safety and effectively fire 9mm ammunition from the G22 or G23 platform.
KKM Precision offers numerous aftermarket barrels for Glock pistols with fully supported chambers. I’ve used its barrels in the past and been impressed by the inherent accuracy they provided. For this particular project I ordered a G22 barrel chambered in 9mm. KKM catalogs four different barrel options for the G22, as well as dozens of others for various Glock models.
Para USA SSP Gun Rights .45ACP
The name Para USA conjures up visions of high capacity 1911-style pistols, new, huge extractors and their LDA (Light Double Action). Their catalog and website is replete with pictures and descriptions of subcompact, double stack LDA pistols for defense, high capacity/high speed race guns for competition and simple, single-action, single stack 1911 pistols.
I’ve done one or more articles a year on Para guns for several years running. When I’d gone for the biggest part of a year without a Para coming in for a test, I went into “Para withdrawal.” I made contact with them and they promised something special.

History of Airsoft Guns
The earlier spring guns soon evolved into gas powered ones and airsoft gunplay became a popular sport. In 1990 the hobby of airsoft gunplay spilled over to North America, and it was then that the low powered cheaper spring guns were transformed into classic airsoft guns.
In the year 2000 automatic electric guns hit the market and many of the original airsoft manufactures in Japan went out of business as Japan hit a big recession, and only Tokyo Marui was left to be the primary manufacturer of these guns. Since then the AEG (automatic electric guns) market has grown to become the most popular of the airsoft replica guns. Mostly because a large number of manufacturers joined in from China and Taiwan to create airsoft gun replicas.
Today almost every type of real military weapon is replicated in airsoft style, including, auto and semi-auto, rifles, shotguns and hand guns, it is an intricate and realistic hobby for many who participate in the military battle style games with airsoft guns at the many commercial battle grounds all over the US.
The original source of the actual military type style of play that is so popular with airsoft gun enthusiasts is unknown, but its popularity continues from 2001 to the present as many enjoy the hobby of battle with airsoft guns.

Colt Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR)
The Colt IAR is Colt’s entry in the Marine IAR competition for a lightweight automatic rifle to replace the SAW in certain situations. It is an interesting weapon.
Photos by SMGLee. Click to expand
Under the barrel you can see a hefty heatsink. This is used to prevent cook-offs (when the primer of a chambered round is ignited by a hot chamber). It weights 9.5 lbs and has a 16″ barrel.
It looks like the barrel may be be changed by simply removing the bolt you can see just in front of the magazine well.
Surprisingly the rifle/machine gun does not use a gas piston and uses the AR-15/M16 direct gas impingement system.
The above photo does show a Magpul PMAG but the Marines have specified that the IAR must be compatible with 30 USGI magazines, so it is unlikely the military will be adopting PMAGs, even in a limited role with the IAR.
Other IAR entries can operate with either an open bolt, in automatic fire, or closed bolt in semi automatic mode. This allows the accuracy benefits of a closed bolt with the heat reduction and reduced chance of a cook off of a closed bolt. I am not sure if this weapon has this feature.
Colt already have a lightweight automatic rifle, the Colt Automatic Rifle (CAR), which itself may meet the Marines requirements. I do not know if the Colt IAR has anything in common with the CAR, other than the shared AR-15 heritage.
ParaUSA LTC – Gun Blog 9
ParaUSA was kind enough to provide me with a firearm for the duration of the event, a 9mm customized version of their LTC platform. Hit the link to check out the standard version of the gun. The pistols that we had in 9mm were slightly different from the standard version, as you can see. (Note: Click all pictures for the fullsize version.) The flash wiped out the coyote brown finish a little bit in this picture, but the rest of the details of the pistol should be readily apparent. It had a single action trigger, a fiber-optic front sight, adjustable sights on the rear, an ambi-safety, skeletonized hammer and trigger, and of course the cherry on the Sundae of Awesome, a pair of Crimson Trace laser grips.
When I first saw it, I thought to myself “this is a pretty cool heater”, and then I flipped it over and looked at the right side of the gun, which pretty much cemented my decision to purchase right then and there. I mean come on, who wouldn’t want a gun that said “Gun Blog 9″ on the side, right? As to the actual shooting, I had not previously spent a lot of time with the 1911 platform, having maybe put 500 rounds downrange out of 1911s in my entire life, which really isn’t a whole lot. I didn’t have anything against the platform, I thought that it was a fine gun for stuff, it just didn’t fit my needs.
Putting north of 1500 rounds through this gun changed my opinion of 1911s, not because I now think it’s the ultimate weapons platform, but I understand the gun a lot better. I still don’t like grip safeties very much, but I will say that the 1911 grip angle pointed more naturally than any other handgun I’ve ever run; the fact that when I listed to Todd Jarrett and did my part that the Para LTC would come right back on target didn’t hurt either.
I shot more than 1500 rounds of ammo through this gun, and I had exactly 1, count it 1, failure to feed, fire, or eject. The gun was on it’s 700th-ish round, and hadn’t been cleaned and failed to fully chamber a round, a malfunction that was easily fixed by a sharp “whack” to the rear of the slide to seat the bullet. In terms of accuracy, the ParaUSA LTC is far more accurate than I can hold. In fact, once I figured out the Kentucky windage, I was able to easily knock down 8 inch steel plates at 35-40ish yards with the pistol, which was a fun sort of “bang-wait-clang” exercise.
Now, the LTC is designed as a carry gun – as soon as I get my mitts on mine, that’s exactly what’s going to happen to it, is it’s going to end up riding around in a holster with me whenever I put my pants on. I’ll get the adjustable sights lined up for 147 grain hollow points and then we’ll be off to the races with my new gun. It’s light, and even with a full mag will be much, much easier to conceal than my much beloved 92D.
Here’s the part that hurts a bit. I liked the ParaUSA LTC so much that it turned me on to 1911s, and after spending 12 hours in a car with Tamara, I’m now equipped to make a smart decision on what kind of pistol to buy as a starting point to my .45 ACP 1911…which will end up getting used in Custom Defensive Pistol in IDPA and Single Stack Classic in USPSA.
If you were wondering how I felt about the Para LTC – Gun Blog edition, I loved mine. I’m (of course), going to buy it, and can’t wait to get the FFL and all that other stuff squared away so I can get it in my hot little hands. If you’re looking for a Commander sized 1911 but don’t want the whack and roll of a .45, think Para LTC. Seriously, this was a fantastic gun. If you don’t believe me, check out the video Sebastian posted. I’m the only one with an LTC in the video, and you can see it in action at around 2:37 mark. That’s six steel plates, and we had to shoot them in the order 1,6,2,3,4,5. The gun was so fast back on target that I nailed them in about 4 seconds with no misses. My LTC is going to be used as carry gun, and an IDPA and steel gun, and I can’t wait for my first match.

Women Buying More Guns in Connecticut
The state issued 7,741 pistol permits from January through May, a 90 percent increase over the same time period in 2008. Nearly 12,000 new permits have been issued so far this year in a state that recently posted one of the lowest gun ownership rates in the country, according a study of 2006 data by the Violence Policy Center, a national gun control advocacy group based in Washington, D.C.
Connecticut gun retailers and educators who run the safety classes required for pistol permit applicants report a surge in first-time gun purchases, particularly by women, who account for up to half of the students taught in Torrington.
"I think that the percentage that you'd see of women coming for the first time has quadrupled," said John Petricone, a staffer at Tactical Arms in Torrington. Pistol safety classes that once drew about nine men for every woman are now evenly split, Petricone said.
Herb Furhman, a retired state trooper who now trains correction officers and operates HF LeanSafety LLC in New Milford, said his private classes are running at capacity, and about a third of his students are female.
"There's more single women now," Furhman said.
"They want to be protected in their home."
Furhman said high-profile crimes, including the Aug. 6 home invasion and rape of a New Milford woman and the notorious 2007 home invasion rape and murder of Dr. William Petit's wife and two daughters in Cheshire, fuel much of the interest in firearms. He recently secured certification to teach an advanced course on personal protection in the home, with a first class coming in October.
Ray Sausanavitch, owner of Wolf's Indoor Range and Shooting Center in Bristol, said his began to jump during the 2008 presidential campaign.

The fight over the Second Amendment
Those 14 words, perhaps more than any others in the U.S. Constitution, have inspired discussions, arguments and legal debates for years and years.
Now, legislation introduced in January by Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) and lingering in the House Judiciary Committee has stirred up emotions on both sides of the gun control issue and once again brought these words into the spotlight.
Rush's bill, the Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act (H.R. 45), establishes a federal licensing and registration regime under the direction of the U.S. Attorney General and would make it a criminal act not to register as an owner of a firearm.
The bill will also:
· Establish a federal licensing requirement for ownership of handguns and semiautomatic weapons, not including antiques, with application requirements which include a photograph of the gun owner, fingerprinting of the gun owner, a current address, a completed, written firearms safety test, and private mental health records. These licenses must be renewed every five years;
· Create a federal registration database for handguns and semiautomatics to which every new sale or transfer -- including transfers among private individuals -- in America must be reported within 14 days;
· Require a background check to be performed in any transfer of guns and provides penalties of up to two years in jail for failure to comply with any licensing or background check requirements.
· Establish penalties of up to 10 years for parents whose children gain access to their firearms unless they meet certain federally-established requirements.
It should be noted there are already federally required background checks for purchasing weapons. A government database of all gun owners or longer waiting periods will not keep criminals from getting their hands on a gun.
Furthermore, this bill does nothing to curb the criminals who would use handguns to commit a crime. Just the opposite -- it would turn law-abiding citizens into lawbreakers for overlooking one of many forms or address verification.
Any bill which would require photographing and fingerprinting for simply possessing a firearm flies in the face of our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms.
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees -- and as the U.S. Supreme Court definitively ruled in District of Columbia v Heller -- the American people have the right to keep and bear arms.
As a member of the National Rifle Association and the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, I will work with my colleagues in the House of Representatives to promote legislation protecting our constitutional rights and oppose legislation, such as H.R. 45, which restricts such rights.
We need to work harder to ensure the safety of our citizens, but we must do so in a way which protects our Constitutionally-guaranteed rights.
Our country's founding fathers understood how important the principle of the Second Amendment is in ensuring our basic freedoms. They had faith in the citizens of America. We should have the same faith in our fellow countrymen today.

While the Colt name is virtually synonymous with handguns, Sam Colt’s initial revolvers off the assembly line were longarms. That’s right. The first production model of any Colt was the No.1 Ring Lever Rifle. The carbine breech (attachable shoulder stocks for handguns) and America’s first slide action rifle were also part of Colt’s on-and-off ventures into longarms. Then in 1963 the AR-15 and M16 .223 automatic rifles “made Colt’s the small-arms sensation of modern warfare”. Their unmatched accuracy, performance and durability are available in their direct descendent, the Colt semiautomatic-only, sporting rifles. They’re ideal for hunting, plinking and competition shooting.
